Guyliner

I get most of my makeup from Sephora. I am absolutely addicted to that store. Last time I went in, I needed some suggestions on a product I was using. The makeup artist on duty was a guy…who wore more makeup than I did. Anyway, I noticed a couple of women pass by and then whisper, obviously about his appearance. It kind of made me think about how we build up these gender biases and how they came about. Why pink for girls and blue for boys? Why is it acceptable for girls to wear makeup to improve their appearance or to hide a pimple, but a boy is just stuck with their face exposed even if a little concealer could possibly help their appearance? How did dresses become a thing that only women wear? Why are women supposed to be prim and proper, but it is acceptable for men to just “let it all hang out?” If women have multiple sex partners they are considered promiscuous, but if men do the same they are considered more manly. How did these things happen? How did they evolve? I know the easy answer is just “societal norms.” But these things had to transpire over a long period of time. Another question…how did curse words become curse words? How did people decide which words were going to be “bad?” And who decided that??? Curse words are a weird concept to me. I mean, they are just words like any other words…but some words are bad?? I mean, of course taking the Lord’s name is vain is bad. But calling a pile of poop by another name…is that really bad? Who decided that? Just a question. I have always wanted to know the history of curse words. Maybe I need to Wikipedia that.  Anyway, back to the man makeup. I kind of feel bad for guys. You know, if I have a blemish, I can easily cover it up…no one knows. But guys, no can do. They wear concealer, and all of a sudden, they are compared to women. Why can’t a guy cover up a pimple? Who decided makeup is only for women? Look, I am not saying I want my husband and I to share lipstick or anything…  Just wondering where all of these gender roles came from. I know this day in age they are continuing to blur and change. Some of them I don’t mind. I like a man in pink!

Two days ago we got a great answer from our attorney general in Texas! We had requested opinions on a couple of abortion questions. We got the answers we wanted. One was whether RU-486 (medication abortion) was in fact an abortion. I know it is hard to believe, but some Planned Parenthood centers were actually trying to claim that they DIDN’T KNOW that a medication abortion was an abortion. WHAT???? I know that is crazy, but that really is what happened. So, we got a favorable ruling on that. Also, we had asked a question about informed consent. Currently, the abortion industry performs their “informed consent” via a recorded message. I don’t know about you, but anytime I have had surgery, I have always been able to ask my physician questions while I am consenting to surgery. Well, Planned Parenthood doesn’t follow those rules. What is funny about this is that even in the textbook Planned Parenthood loves, authored by the National Abortion Federation, states that informed consent needs to be a DIALOGUE between doctor and patient. Clearly, a recorded message would not fit into that category. So now, because of this ruling, PP’s style is really going to be cramped. They are going to have to actually perform informed consent over the phone. The physician is going to have to answer the patient’s questions…amazing. The doctor is actually going to have to take time for the patient. What a concept. Honestly, I don’t know how some centers are going to pull it off. It is not ideal, but it is a start. We would rather it be a face to face consult, but this is definitely better than the message. One step at a time! One baby at a time!!!!

Did Somebody Say Steak?

Animal Rights vs. Human Rights.  Is this really a debate?  Seriously?  I love it when we are about to have an event and PETA calls to get a statement.  They always say, “If you are pro-life, then why do you eat animals.”  What is so funny to me about that is that, undoubtedly, ALL of them are pro-choice!!!!  So, my question is, “If you are against killing animals, then why do you believe it is okay to kill children during abortion?”  I just don’t get it.  I don’t understand how someone can actually think that a chicken can have the same “rights” as a person.  I mean, am I missing something here???????  Now, of course I believe in the humane treatment of animals.  Almost all of our animals have come from the shelter.  And I do believe that animals deserve to be protected.  But, do I think they deserve the same “rights” as humans???  No, of course not.  They are not humans!  I mean, have we become so dumb as a culture that we don’t even know what things are anymore?  If I showed you a banana, I think most of you would be able to say, “That is a banana.”  Right?  Okay, if I show you a frog, I think most everyone would be able to say, “That is a frog.”  Now, is a banana and a frog the same thing?  I hope you would say no.  You would say no because we are all smart enough to know what things are.  We know that a dog is a dog and a person is a person.  How have we gotten things so backwards?  Dogs do not deserve the same rights as people because THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE!  I just don’t even understand the argument here.

I recently saw an ad that had Pam Anderson on it.  She was dressed (or not really dressed) in a bikini and she was drawn on like you would quarter out a piece of beef.  Well, my first thought was, there is just not enough fat there for any good quality meat.  :)   My second thought was, I don’t think silicone is edible.  My third thought was, what in the world does this have to do with eating beef?  I see what they were trying to do…but the bottom line is that cows aren’t people.  Cows are here so we can sustain ourselves.  What else would we do with them?  I don’t think they would make very good pets.  They would be very difficult to litter train.  I believe that animals were put here for us.  But many people don’t buy that.  Well, that would be the people that believe we are equal with animals.  But if that is not the reason they are here, then why else are they here?  Just to make us happy?  I don’t think so.

Well, all of this talk about food has made me hungry.  I think I will go have a steak.

Skin Deep

I have really been bothered by something lately.  I think women are amazing.  Men are okay, too.  J  But really, women are the most amazing things created by God.  We were given the gift of bearing children, we have natural beauty that other things don’t possess, we are naturally compassionate, we are beautifully vulnerable…I mean, we are pretty awesome.  So why is it that so many women don’t see that in themselves?  Why is it that so many women abuse all of those gifts and cheapen themselves?  Why pornography?  I know that we all want to blame pornography on those perverted men, but is it really them…or is it really us?  Okay, my very favorite dessert in the whole world is lemon cake.  I mean, I LOVE IT!!!  I really love all things lemon, but my very favorite is lemon cake.  I love everything about it.  And if you put a piece in front of me, I am going to eat it.  It really doesn’t matter what the consequence is…I am going to eat that lemon cake.  All self-control is thrown out the window when it comes to lemon cake.  Now, I am not saying that people shouldn’t be able to control themselves…and I am certainly not letting men off the hook, but I am asking…is this really ALL their fault?  I think not.  I think that women have to bear some of the responsibility.

I always find it interesting when these pro-women advocates (I do include myself in this group) condone pornography.  That is so contradictory.  How can you say you believe in the equality of women on one hand, but then on the other believe that it is okay to make them visual sex slaves to men?  That doesn’t seem equal.  To me, there is nothing more degrading to a woman than pornography.  You are presenting yourself as an object…something to stimulate.  Nothing of value, nothing of substance.

I am so saddened by all of the women who have bought into this lie.  They believe that by baring themselves to men, they will be loved by them.  But it must ultimately leave them feeling so unfulfilled, so void.  They have a check and they received some attention, but in the end, they are still empty.  They are simply remembered by the skin they showed in photos or on film.

How do we do better?  How do we teach our kids that our skin is just a covering to what is really important?  Christ didn’t die for our flesh.  Our flesh is not what matters.  But somehow we have gotten off track.  How do we teach our girls that there is so much more to them than outward beauty?  How do we teach our boys that a woman’s value is measured by so much more than a beautiful face?  Our kids are so saturated with vanity and pop culture lies.  They don’t even know the truth anymore.  I want my daughter to know that unusual is beautiful, that “ugly” is just a perception (one that I hope she doesn’t develop).  I think as parents we have to work every day to shape our children’s perceptions of beauty, wealth, unique, attractive, etc.  I for one do not want Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber to shape what my daughter sees as “normal” or “model.”  I want her to make her own “normal.”

Morning Breath

Everybody hates morning breath.  It is the worst when you wake up next to someone and they yawn right in your face.  But I have to tell you, there is nothing better than waking up next to my little buttercup, Gracie.  I love her morning breath.  That may seem gross, but if you are a mom, I think you know what I mean.  Yes, yes, I know she shouldn’t be sleeping in bed with me, but I just can’t help it.  I am not home a lot so when I am, I like to snuggle with her.  And I love it in the morning when she wakes straight up in bed, smiles and then just starts talking ninety miles per minute about her dreams, what she wants to do that day, or what she did the day before.  There is nothing sweeter…and I think I could smell that breath all day. :)   AND, I wish I woke up with that much energy! haha!

I flew yesterday on September 11th.  I have to say that I was a little nervous on the flight.  That may seem silly, but I was.  Plus, I flew American…so that didn’t help.  I was watching TV in the terminal before I left and I just couldn’t help but think that a “moment of silence” just isn’t enough for those that lost their lives that day.  It just seems so small.  Plus, now it feels like with all of this mosque controversy, we have lost that sense of rememberance and reverence.  Gosh, we are so quick to forget, aren’t we?  It has only been nine years, but you would think it had been ninety with the way people act.

I was wondering the other day when people stopped covering their mouth when they yawn?  I grew up believing that was the proper thing to do.  Now, I am in the airport all of the time and see people with their mouth WIDE open and no mouth covering.  It is really gross.  So, public service announcement…please cover your mouth when you yawn!  Nobody wants to see that.

I have been at the CareNet Conference this week.  It has been absolutely amazing!  Besides the fact that I got to see so many of my awesome friends from all over the country, it is just a really humbling experience for me.  To be around so many wonderful people that have dedicated their lives to the pro-life movement is truly amazing.  I wonder all of the time why God chose me to share my story.  I am no hero.  I am no one that deserves praise for their past or their present.  I finally left a place that I shouldn’t have been in the first place.  But these people (and so many others) have dedicated their lives to this movement.  They are the heroes.  Not me.  I am so honored to even be in the same movement with all of them.

So, PP in Cali is in pretty big trouble…could lose their funding for fraudulent billing.  Man, those whistleblowers sure are trouble! :)   God bless them!
